To celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary, 2K brings native 60 FPS to current-gen consoles. Here’s what changed, who qualifies, and how to get your copy.

Mafia III: Definitive Edition turned 10 this month, and 2K marked the occasion by releasing native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions on October 8, along with a quality-of-life update on Steam. The headline feature is 60 FPS gameplay, plus a round of technical fixes across New Bordeaux. The upgrade is free for existing owners, but claiming it works differently on each console, and not everyone qualifies, so here’s the full breakdown.

What Changed in the Update

  • 60 FPS gameplay: Native 60 FPS on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Cutscenes rendered in real time also run at 60 FPS, while older pre-rendered video cutscenes stay locked at 30 FPS.
  • Visual stability: Fixes for lighting glitches, texture pop-in, shadow flickering and vegetation streaming issues.
  • Trophy and achievement tracking: Fixed bugs that caused progress to freeze or fail to register.
  • Mission progression: Resolved progression blockers and infinite load screens at certain campaign and DLC checkpoints.
  • DLC fixes: Corrected the broken wiretap map data and dead junction box after finishing Stones Unturned.
  • AI and combat polish: General pathing, cover and behavior fixes for both companion and enemy AI.

Who Qualifies for the Free Upgrade

According to 2K’s official terms, eligibility depends on your console and how you own the game:

  • PlayStation 4 owners (physical or digital) receive the PS5 digital version of the same title.
  • Xbox One owners (digital) receive the Xbox Series X|S digital version of the same title.
  • Xbox One physical owners are not eligible for the free upgrade.
  • The current-gen version is a separate download, and the offer is limited to one per customer.

The upgrade is also available to owners of Mafia: The Omertà Collection and Mafia: Trilogy.

How to Claim the Upgrade on PS5

  • Digital owners: Search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition on the PS Store, open the […] menu next to Download/Play, choose Select Version / View Product, pick the PS5 Native Version and download it for free.
  • PS4 disc owners: Insert the PS4 disc into your PS5, open the game’s PS Store page, use the […] menu to select the native PS5 version and claim it for $0.00. Keep the disc in the drive while you claim it, and leave it inserted if the game asks for it afterward.

How to Claim the Upgrade on Xbox Series X|S

  • Digital owners: Search for “Mafia III Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S” on the Microsoft Store, select the native current-gen version and click Install / Claim for $0.00.
  • Xbox One disc owners: Not eligible directly, since the free upgrade excludes physical Xbox One copies.

💿 Only have the disc? There may be a workaround. Mafia III appears on the supported list for Xbox’s Disc to Digital program, which turns a physical disc into a digital license on your account. In theory, that digital license should then qualify you for the Series X|S version, but 2K hasn’t confirmed this, so try it before buying a second copy. Here’s our guide on how to claim your games with Disc to Digital.

If Disc to Digital doesn’t work for you, buying the digital version is a cheaper fallback than usual: Mafia III is currently 80% off on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam as part of an ongoing franchise sale, though that discount is temporary.

🎮 Grabbing the sale while it lasts? Top up your wallet with a PlayStation Store gift card or an Xbox gift card and pick up the game without touching your credit card.

What to Know Before You Download

  • No save transfers. PS4 and Xbox One saves can’t carry over to the native versions, so you’ll start a new campaign.
  • Fresh trophies and achievements. The current-gen version counts as a separate app, with its own trophy list and Gamerscore, and your old progress won’t pop automatically.
  • No new content. There’s no New Game Plus, no extra manual save slots and no new modes in this update.
