Starting a new life in Pelican Town might look peaceful, but the first 15 days in Stardew Valley are pure chaos. Low energy, empty pockets, and a ticking clock make it easy to commit game-slowing mistakes.

If you want to avoid bankruptcy and launch your farm on the right foot, follow this step-by-step early game roadmap.

Day 1: Farm Awakening

  • Minimal Clearing: Clear only the immediate area around your house to start planting. Do not waste energy clearing the entire map on Day 1.
  • Plant Parsnips: Sow the 15 free Parsnip seeds given by Lewis.
  • Buy Seeds: Head straight to Pierre’s General Store and spend all your starting gold on Potato and Cauliflower seeds. Potatoes have a random chance to yield extra crops upon harvest.
  • Gather Wood: Chop down enough trees to get 50 Wood and craft your first Chest immediately. Storage management is critical.

Days 2–4: Fishing & Foraging Route

  • Get the Rod: Head down to the Beach to trigger Willy’s cutscene and grab your free Bamboo Pole.
  • Fish Non-Stop: Spend your afternoons fishing at the Beach or the Mountain Lake. Fishing is the absolute best way to generate early-game cash flow.
  • Sell Smart: Keep low-quality fish to eat for energy; sell higher-value fish directly to Willy.
  • Day 4 Target: The Mines unlock. Shift your primary focus to mineral gathering.

Days 5–12: The Mines, Community Center & Economy

  • Unlock the Community Center: Enter Town from the Bus Stop on a sunny day after Day 5 to trigger the Community Center cutscene.
  • Mine Delving: Water your crops in the morning, then hit the Mines to clear at least 5 floors every afternoon. You need Copper Ore to upgrade your tools.
  • Craft Scarecrows: As soon as you hit Farming Level 1, craft Scarecrows right away. Crows will destroy your crops if left unprotected.
  • Hoard Gold: Stop buying random seeds at Pierre’s. Save every single coin for Day 13.

Day 13: Egg Festival (The Game Changer)

  • Buy Strawberry Seeds: Attend the festival in the Town Square and invest every cent you have into Strawberry Seeds (100g each).
  • Night Planting: When you return to the farm at 10:00 PM, immediately till, plant, and water all your Strawberries. They yield two harvests before Spring ends, setting up your financial foundation.

Days 14–15: Salmonberry Season & Upgrades

  • Salmonberry Foraging: Bushes across Pelican Town will be loaded with Salmonberries. Spend these two days shaking every bush. They serve as your main free energy source for the rest of Spring.
  • Copper Pickaxe: Take 5 Copper Bars and 2,000g to Clint the Blacksmith to upgrade your Pickaxe to Copper. This speeds up your mining progression drastically.

3 Fatal Early-Game Mistakes to Avoid

  • Upgrading the Watering Can Randomly: Only drop off your Watering Can when the TV predicts rain tomorrow, or wait until Winter. Missing a day of watering your Strawberries delays your harvest.
  • Ignoring the TV: Watch the TV every morning. The Weather Report and Fortune Teller determine whether you should hit the Mines (high luck) or stick to farm chores.
  • Passing Out at 2:00 AM: Be in bed by 12:00 AM for maximum energy recovery. Staying out past 1:00 AM or passing out in the wild will cost you gold and energy penalties.

Follow this exact schedule, and by Day 16 you will have a massive Strawberry plantation, upgraded tools, and more than enough gold to transition smoothly into Summer.
