Reports suggest Ubisoft is quietly rebuilding its most divisive Watch Dogs entry, complete with a night mode and new motion capture, even as fans ask why Legion specifically got the second chance.
According to industry sources, Ubisoft is working on a Director’s Cut of Watch Dogs: Legion, targeting a release in the first half of 2027. The claim has been circulating for a few months now, but recent reporting adds a rough release window, even though Ubisoft itself has not made any official announcement. Developers affected by layoffs at Red Storm were reportedly called back to work on the project during their notice period, which suggests the Director’s Cut has been in active development for some time already.

What We Know (and Don’t)
Details remain thin. Earlier reports mentioned new motion capture sessions and a full “night mode,” but it’s still unclear exactly what else the Director’s Cut will change, whether that means reworked missions, visual upgrades, new content, or some combination of all three. It’s also not confirmed whether this will be a free update for existing owners or a separate paid release. Some speculation ties the timing to a possible film adaptation of the franchise, since reusing Legion’s existing assets and setting would require far less work than building a new entry from scratch, though that connection hasn’t been confirmed either.
🎮 Want to revisit London before any Director’s Cut lands? Watch Dogs: Legion is worth a look now, especially if you skipped it back in 2020.
Why Legion, of All Games?
This is the part fans keep asking about. Watch Dogs: Legion is widely considered the weakest entry in the series, and the franchise itself was reported as effectively “on ice” earlier in the year, with some pushing back only slightly on how dead it really was. That makes the choice to specifically revisit Legion, rather than the original Watch Dogs or Watch Dogs 2, an odd one on the surface, and even the people closest to the rumor admit they aren’t entirely sure why Legion was picked over the other two games.

Ubisoft’s Public Stance
Despite the skepticism, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently stated that Watch Dogs remains important to the company’s future, a comment that lines up with reports of around 100 developers at Ubisoft Montreal currently working on the project. That said, Watch Dogs has notably not been placed into any of Ubisoft’s new “Creative Houses,” the restructured internal divisions the company has been organizing its franchises under, which leaves the series’ long-term status somewhat ambiguous even if this one project moves forward.
Should You Trust This Rumor?
Treat this as unconfirmed for now. Nothing has come from Ubisoft directly, and release windows on unannounced projects shift constantly. Watch Dogs: Legion originally launched in October 2020, so a Director’s Cut arriving in the first half of 2027 would land roughly six and a half years after the base game, plenty of time for plans to change between now and then.
