Industry reports suggest Microsoft is preparing a massive overhaul for Xbox Game Pass. Following years of discussion around the financial sustainability of subscription models, a leaked proposal points to a complete overhaul of pricing, tier structures, and core features coming early next year.
Leaked Game Pass Changes & Tiers
- Ad-Supported vs. Ad-Free Tiers: Game Pass will split into an Ad-Supported plan at $12.99/month and an Ad-Free plan at $19.99/month (or $239.99/year).
- End of Day-One Releases: Starting between February and April, brand-new games will no longer launch Day One on Game Pass. Microsoft is reportedly reducing the base tier price by $3 to offset this major change.
- Standalone Online Multiplayer: Online multiplayer access will be decoupled from base Game Pass and sold as its own standalone subscription for $10.99/month.
- Game Pass + Multiplayer Bundle: Players can bundle basic access to the Game Pass library with online multiplayer for $14.99/month.
- Cloud Streaming Removed from Base Subs: Cloud Streaming will no longer be bundled into main tiers and will instead become a $5.99 add-on capped at 25 hours of play time.
- Family Plan Add-on: A shared Family Plan option will be available as a $5.99/month add-on.

What This Means for Gamers
If true, this shift marks the end of Microsoft’s aggressive “Day-One” strategy. By separating online multiplayer and cloud features into add-ons while introducing ads, Xbox appears focused on driving direct game sales and increasing profitability across its platform.
