A 14-page cover story digs into how Rockstar is building Leonida’s weather, wildlife and world detail ahead of the November 19 launch.
Game Informer’s October cover story on Grand Theft Auto VI, published digitally on September 29, delivers the deepest look yet at how Rockstar Games built Leonida. The 14-page feature, based on interviews with several Rockstar lead designers, arrives alongside 12 new exclusive screenshots and confirms one of the most repeated pieces of pre-release speculation: the map is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s. The story lands seven weeks before the game’s November 19 release, giving fans their biggest batch of confirmed details since August’s Netflix Extended Look.

A World Built Around Weather and Density
Rockstar’s designers described an advanced weather system engineered to be more localized and persistent than anything in the studio’s past games, aiming for what the feature calls “a sense of scale we haven’t felt before.” Screenshots included with the story appear to show a hurricane, and Game Informer describes heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and rain, alongside dynamic cloudscapes made of multiple cloud varieties that roll across the map. Rockstar stayed vague about exactly how weather ties into missions or the story, so whether a storm can change how a heist plays out is still an open question. That same obsession with density extends indoors: the studio said it “hit a critical mass” with the sheer number of interiors, having gone deep on rooftops, alleys and building internals across Leonida.

🌀 Florida weather has a way of catching people off guard, virtually or not. A portable weather radio is a good call for anyone actually living through hurricane season, not just simulating it.
NPCs Get an Unprecedented Level of Detail
The feature also covers how Rockstar approached its citizens. NPCs reportedly vary by height, body type and musculature, with localized weight distribution in areas like chests, stomachs and glutes. Game Informer says the studio also built out skin types, freckles, moles, tans, culturally accurate tattoo styles, hair and body grooming, aiming for a population that actually looks like it belongs in a real place rather than a rotation of reused character models.

Over 170 Animal Species Call Leonida Home
Wildlife turned out to be one of the story’s biggest reveals. Leonida is home to more than 170 animal species, including over 60 bird types and roughly 30 land mammals, plus a range of fish and reptiles. Confirmed species include manatees, flamingos, pelicans, multiple shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish. According to the feature, animals display iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency and varied feather types, and Rockstar built new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts, fully simulated fur that reacts to interaction with matting from dirt, clumping, and getting wet. On top of the wildlife and weather, Rockstar also confirmed a wide spread of side activities, including billiards, gyms, kayaking, street racing, off-road racing, zoo visits, air boating, jet skiing and base jumping.
