NC’s free-to-play MMORPG arrives 17 years after the original, with a world 36 times larger and flight built into its core combat.

NC, formerly known as NCSOFT, officially launched AION 2 worldwide on PC via Steam and its own PURPLE platform, free to play, 17 years after the original AION first released. The global rollout follows a deliberate build-up: NC started reaching out to Western players back in March, gathering feedback and adjusting pricing to better match what Western audiences expect, before showing the game publicly at Summer Games Fest Play Days in June and Gamescom in August. A Launch Scale Test followed in mid-September, then Early Access opened on September 30, and the game already hit the number one spot on Steam’s Global top-selling chart across more than 10 regions before today’s full launch.

A Much Bigger, Flight-Focused Atreia

AION 2 picks up 200 years after the original game’s conflict. With the Tower of Eternity destroyed, the long-standing Elyos and Asmodian factions now have to navigate a fractured world while dealing with a newly empowered third faction, the Balaur. Built on Unreal Engine 5 with heavy modifications for character customization and multiplayer, the world is reportedly 36 times larger than the original AION, and freedom of movement, including flight, sits at the center of the game’s identity, with aerial combat and traversal built directly into exploration rather than treated as a side feature. Combat blends traditional tab-targeting with an emphasis on precision, timing and positioning, aiming for a faster pace than the genre’s older conventions.

⚔️ Jumping into Atreia for the long haul? A gaming headset with clear positional audio helps a lot in an MMO built around aerial combat and large-scale battles.

What There Is to Actually Do

On the character side, players choose from eight classes and more than 200 customization options. PvE ranges from solo content and five-player dungeons up to 10-player raids, with mastering movement and teamwork positioned as the core loop rather than pure gear checks. PvP covers a similarly wide range, from 1v1 and 4v4 arenas to massive cross-server RvR (Realm-vs-Realm) battles, and the return of the faction-based Abyss zone from the original game, a long-running staple of AION’s PvP identity.

🎮 Free doesn’t mean you can’t gear up for it. A mechanical keyboard built for MMO hotkey management makes juggling AION 2’s class skills a lot smoother.

Available Now, Worldwide

AION 2 runs on dedicated servers in North America, South America, Europe and Asia (Japan), and is localized into English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Russian. It carries an ESRB rating of T for Teen and a PEGI rating of 16+. The game is free to download and play right now on both Steam and PURPLE.
